Get Your Pen Out Of My Crack

Are you committing this marketing cardinal sin?

Are you talking too much about yourself in your emails, ads and videos?

There are few things scarier to a young composer than a famous opera singer yelling in their face.

This happened to me during rehearsals of my opera at the John F. Kennedy Center. The soprano I was working with was furious!

"PEW! Get out of my crack!"

I was in trouble. But she wasn't being crude.

Female singers have a "problem" spot in their voices. It's called the "passagio." If they sing certain notes too often, their voices crack like a pimple faced 13-year-old boy.

I wrote a melody that made her sing in that difficult range. The real problem was, I made her sound like an amateur. BIG composer fail!

One of the secrets of writing a great opera is writing music that fits the voices of the singers.

There are all types of singers with all kinds of voices.

  • Low grumbling basses stomping around like terrifying villains...

  • High heroic tenors trying to get the girl...

  • Crooning mezzo sopranos (those are ladies with lower voices, the warm sexy kind...my favorite!)

  • And of course, everyone's favorite, the big sopranos with Viking horns. The ones who can break a glass with their shrills and shrieks.

These mega-singers don't give a crap about the composer. They care about how they sound. If the music doesn't make them sound like a million bucks, they won't sing it. They won't put their reputation on the line by singing something unflattering.

Your clients are no different.

When they read your emails or watch your videos, they're thinking... "How can this help me? How is this going to solve my problems? How is this going to make me look good? How is this going to help me make more money?"

When you talk about yourself the whole time... how wonderful you are... how wonderful your product is... your client's zone out. BIG marketing fail!

In other words, you turn into a bad M.A.E.S.T.R.O.
